Family vineyard worked in organic farming since 2004

The family

The history of the Estate has been written over many generations.

Its origins can be traced back to the SCHMITT family after the Thirty Years’ War

It was in 1985 that Roland joined up with Roger, his father-in-law, to form Domaine SCHMITT & CARRER.

Roland and Sylvie, the second daughter of the SCHMITT family, set out to create an estate in their own image, and in 2004 they started the transition towards Ecocert-certified organic agriculture.

In 2010, they were joined by their daughter Anne-Cécile, the second child of the CARRER family, followed by her husband in 2018, and together they undertook the conversion of the 15 ha of vineyards to Demeter-certified biodynamic principles.

The vineyards

Since 2004, our vineyards have been managed using organic and environmentally friendly methods.

Since 2004, our vineyards have been managed using organic and environmentally friendly methods.

The estate’s vineyards cover some 15 ha and can boast an outstanding geological diversity. Their granite, clay, alluvial, sandy and calcereous marl soils produce wines of distinctive character.

The last 20 years have seen a gradual transition of the estate’s cultivation methods towards increasingly natural techniques: organic fertilisers are used, while the soils are mechanically tilled and the vines treated with plant-based decoctions, infusions and purins (including nettle, horsetail and camomile).

The aim is not to contrast two differing forms of viticulture, but to underline the living aspect of a viticulture in our image, respecting people and the terroir.

Our Wines

Our wines echo our emotions and represent the vibrancy of our vineyards.

Drinking wine is experiencing the feel of a place and your connection with it, with the people who made it and with the whole process of making a living product.

We like vinification to be a simple thing, a process we keep out of as much as possible – slow pressings, natural fermentations conducted by indigenous yeasts, with no inputs.

Before the wines are bottled, they are filtered and a little sulphite added to those with residual sugar to conserve them over time and during shipping.

Our reds have been vinified without sulphites since 2017, while our first sulphite-free white with made in 2021.
